The Institute for Bioprocessing and Analytical Measurement Techniques (IBA) was founded in 1992 as a non-university scientific research institute supported by the Free State of Thuringia collaborating with national and international partners (EU, North- and South America). The highly qualified and experienced interdisciplinary staff represents a mix of scientists, engineers and skilled technicians working in four specialized departments. The trendsetting profile which is defined as "Biotechniques at Interfaces" illustrates that IBA deals with application oriented research topics like

  • applied cultivation techniques for specific microorganisms and cells
  • micro- and nanotechnology with regard to life-sciences applications
  • biofilm characterization for biosensoring and biomonitoring
  • material science (antifouling on sensors and biocompatibility for unique implants and dental compositions).

State-of-the-art laboratories including laboratory containment level 2 requirements for the work with genetic modified organisms and an in-house workshop specialized on precision engineering serve as the basis for a first-class research and the manufacture of prototypes. Furthermore, IBA scientists give lectures within the master course “Miniaturized Biotechnology”.

The Department of Bioprocess Engineering (BPT) is highly application-oriented. The scientific work is focused on innovative solutions for cell cultivation systems (e.g. for stem cells), on characterization of bioprocesses, and on segmented-flow as well as microplate format based modified hanging droplet technology. Increasingly, microsystems and micro technologies as well as surface modification technologies are applied to address the scientific issues. The essential topics of our team are novel scientific instrument development and manufacturing, automation and simulation of different microfluidic systems (segmented- and continuous-flow), bioprocess characterization and modification of material surfaces. Results of the research are e.g. high-throughput systems for (stem) cell cultivation and characterization as well as unique biomagnetics based systems for separation of cancer cells from blood.
